Types of abuse, neglect, and exploitation are defined, described, and discussed within this course. Indicators of potential situations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation will be identified, and preventative methods demonstrated.

Aging

Aging - A Complex Phenomenon - This program will discuss current gerentological trends and statistics as they pertain to residents of assisted living facilities. Common myths will also be discussed as well as appropriate interventions for particular community based issues concerning aging clients transitioning into RCFEs.

Alcoholism in Long Term Care

This course presents an overview of the seriousness and implications of alcohol use with our senior residents. Etiology, detection, manifestations, direct care, and service planning are all examined in the context of caring for the resident with alcohol related problems. The program is interactive and designed to enlighten the student while allowing a self-paced learning environment through on-line education.

Drug classification, mechanism of action, indications, contraindication, and side effects will all be discussed. Important considerations for healthcare providers administering Coumadin will be outlined as well as education points for clients, unlicensed staff, and family members. Client safety is stressed throughout the course.

Dementia Fundamentals

This course begins with an in-depth definition of dementia, its symptoms, specific types of dementia, and possible causes. This program will take participants through a dynamic process of care strategies from preadmission through the progression of the disease including late stage complications. Also presented are unique behavior intervention techniques. Activities are analyzed with particular emphasis on quality of life issues. Research, new trends in care, pharmacological management of dementia as well as self analysis of the quality of care carried out will also be discussed. Emphasis is placed on care provided in the residential care setting.

Depressed Resident

Digestive System

Potentially problematic performance issues and ethical dilemmas will be discussed for the purpose of developing proactive measures to address such situations. Central to this discussion will be end of life issues.

Fire Safety in Assisted Living Facilities

This course takes a look at the issue of fire in assisted living facilities. Statistics show that on the average, once a month a fatal fire occurs in a facility of this nature. Other data concerning fire and this particular population will be explored. In addition, fire safety and emergency plans, fire equipment and the use of such, prevention, training and other aspects of effective management of this area will be addressed.

HIV/AIDS for Care Providers

This course will provide the care provider relevant knowledge about HIV and AIDS. Demographic, geographic, and incident rate data is presented. To assist in their care of residents, care providers will obtain knowledge on the HIV/AIDS clinical signs, symptoms, modes of transmission, risk factors, prevention, and screening and diagnosis. Common HIV medical complications are presented. The participant will receive an overview of how the HIV virus duplicates and the general classes of drugs that target each stage of HIV replication. Participants will gain an understanding of the psychosocial challenges of persons with HIV/AIDS and the importance of positive psychosocial support systems. Universal precautions and care facility considerations are presented to help care providers minimize accidental occupational exposure.

Lice, Scabies, Bed Bugs

This program will provide an in-depth look Lice/Scabies/ Bed Bugs defining infestations, transmission, myths and common treatments, risk, and methods of elimination.

Progress Report on Alzheimer's Disease

This is an advanced course designed for administrators, nurses and care providers desiring to better understand the in-depth issues related to Alzheimer's disease; causes, treatment, prevention and care. The course summarizes the annual Progress Report on Alzheimer's Disease prepared by the National Institute on Aging. Focus is on current understandings as well as research projects currently underway.

Seizure Alert

Seizures are described in great detail as the presentation covers classification, causes, emergency procedures, treatment modalities, as well as current medical screening and diagnostic studies. Substance Abuse & Treatment

Administrators and caregivers will learn the most common drugs of abuse, including their effects and risks. This course also presents the National Institute Drug Abuse 13 Principals of Effective Drug Treatment. Various types of treatment programs and approaches to drug abuse treatment will also be addressed.

Tuberculosis (TB)

This program will provide an in-depth look at Tuberculosis (TB) And the disease processes affecting today’s population. The pathophysiology of this disease process is discussed in great detail as well as potential complications and treatment. Assessment and care of the resident will be discussed as well.

Understanding MRSA

This program provides detailed information regarding methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. Pathophysiology, the infectious process, modes of transmission, and prevention are discussed. Proper staff education, standard precautions, and isolation precautions are discussed as well.

UTI

UTI - Urinary Tract Infection - This program will provide participants with an in-depth look into urinary tract infections and its associated medical conditions. The signs and symptoms, appropriate interventions, treatment, and current research trends of UTI will all be discussed as well as complications, such as pylonephritis. Focus is placed on prevention and treatment.

VRE

VRE - Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus - This course discusses vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) bacteria in great detail. Incidence of infection, pathophysiology, transmission, detection, and disease management will all be presented. Focus is placed on disease prevention with particular attention to the unique concerns of residents in long-term care facilities.
